From the artist: "I just like to ride around Guanacaste and it was late afternoon, just before the sunset colors filled the horizon, when the light is so strong and angular. I happened to see Uncle Tio, and was waiting for him and the parade of cows and his bulls (bueyes) to come down the trail to the pen by his house from the pasture."

In "Campina," Costa Rican artist Hernan Pérez Pérez depicts a panoramic view of the Costa Rican countryside, filling three-quarters of the canvas with sky, conveying a feeling of immensity and emphasizing the light sifting through the atmospheric phenomena of the clouds. From the artist: Always searching for a compelling vision to draw viewers into the beauty of Costa Rica and its beaches, on this day I focused on Surfside, near Playa Tamarindo. I love to paint sunsets which are filled with so many shades of color. On this day, while enjoying a local band concert at the beach, my eyes, as always, continued to roam. In the distance a young girl relaxing on the beach caught my eye under the shade of her umbrella to hide the setting sun. What did she have in her hand? Hmm, something white and rectangular that somehow looked familiar. Oh, yes, a book! What a tranquil and calming way to spend a late afternoon.

This painting was conceived as a cover for a magazine by Nature Air, a former national airline in Costa Rica. In that same edition an extensive article about Hiller's work was featured. It celebrates this magnificent National Park in the south of Costa Rica, the only place in the world that has two annual humpback whale visiting seasons, the southern and northern populations. From the artist: I enjoy painting outdoors, and Costa Rica is a great country for that. But sometimes it starts to rain suddenly. While sitting in front of the painting, the rain drizzled on the canvas and the paint started to drip. I wondered what the last coat of paint I'd added to the almost abstract background would look like displaced by the water. The rain did its job and then I created one of my all-time favorite images, a turtle. Sometimes inspiration comes from above.
